School Description

Provided by Hartwick College
Our purpose as a college of the liberal arts and sciences is to educate people who will thrive in and contribute to the world of the future; people who are prepared to meet the personal, intellectual, and social challenges of a rapidly changing and increasingly interdependent world.

Hartwick College is a private liberal arts and sciences college of 1,480 students, located in beautiful Oneonta, NY in the northern foothills of the Catskill Mountains. Hartwick's expansive curriculum emphasizes connecting the classroom to the world. Through personalized teaching, collaborative research, a unique January Term, a wide range of internships, and limitless study-abroad opportunities, Hartwick ensures that students are prepared for the world ahead. Strong financial aid and scholarship programs keep a Hartwick education affordable.

We believe a college should prepare students for the world ahead--for good jobs, rewarding careers, and interesting lives.

That's why we've designed our curriculum and teaching approaches to break down the barriers that separate the classroom from the world, allowing students to learn "out there" and bring that experience back, making your time in the classroom even more engaging and effective.

At Hartwick, you can tailor your academic experience to meet your interests. With a 12:1 student-to-faculty ratio and an average class size of 18, students really get to know their professors. Professors are mentors who give students the confidence to succeed, in whatever they choose to do.

For one glorious month every year, our students focus their energy and attention directly on a singular topic of their choice. Our January Term allows students to enroll in a single course or independent study on campus, do an off-campus internship, or study abroad.

Few liberal arts colleges offer a natural classroom of woodlands, wetlands, and a lake located just eight miles from the main campus.

Since its purchase by the College in 1971, the Pine Lake Environmental Campus has played an integral role in the College's commitment to environmental studies and awareness and to learning that is collaborative, interdisciplinary, and community centered.
